When you’re looking for a job, you’ll likely be asked for references. In fact, there’s a whole industry of people who exist solely to provide references for job seekers. 

A reference is someone who can speak to your character, qualifications, abilities or some other facet about you. When you’re asked for a reference, you should be prepared to provide an honest and detailed description of the type of job you want and what type of person you would like to work for. Experts recommend that you hand over all your reference letters to a prospective employer if you are asking for a job. However, it isn’t always that simple. 

When providing references, you have to understand how your work history will impact your chances of getting the job. You must also keep in mind that no two jobs are the same, so you also need to understand the job requirements when handing over references.

  • Choose a meaningful as well as insightful reference. You don’t get to choose your career path, but you DO have a choice about who you list as a reference. Ideally, this person can speak clearly as to what you worked on and your main responsibilities. Make sure that the person you are recommending is someone who will be able to accurately and completely describe your skills and qualifications. You may also want to have a reference letter prepared by someone who can speak to the things you have worked on during your career.
  • Prepare your reference list ahead of time. Employers will often ask for references when interviewing employees, so it is important to ensure that you’re prepared to provide them. Doing so will ensure that you are not faced with any awkward moments or awkward questions.
  • Inform the person whom you have listed as your reference. When you’re looking to provide references for an employee, it’s crucial that you ask permission before including contact in your references. 
  • A variety of references will be highly appreciated. References play a big role in any job application. They ensure that you are who you say you are and are a good indication of the type of employee you are, so it makes sense to include a variety of references and people from different positions. The reason is not that you will be asked for three references, but that each of the references you include will tell your potential employer something about you. The right type of job reference for you might be a former boss from your current company, a coworker from your current company, or a supervisor at your last job.
  • Don’t forget to say “thank you” to your references. The second thing you must do when providing references is to thank your references. It’s very important that you do this. Why? Because, in most cases, they are the ones who got you the job. You can’t get a job without a reference, and you can’t get a reference without someone willing to go through the trouble of talking about you on the phone and in person. So, it’s only polite to thank them for all their help in getting you the job. The problem is, many job seekers forget to do so.
