What the Careers Press says

Careers Guidance Today (ICG)

May 2011 – Careers4u.tv website ‘From the horse’s mouth’ is an overworked expression, but aptly sums up what you have here. This is a pay site but what you get is a comprehensive library of video interviews with young workers and entrepreneurs across a massive range of job categories. Many are in their mid twenties so you can really see what all the training is worth. Where this site really scores is not just in the quality and interest value of the videos, but also on the searches. You can search by qualifications, favourite subject and lifestyle as well as by business type and industry sector. Parents and teachers also get their own sections. One not to miss!

February 2011 – Careers4u.tv website The technical quality of the film clips is excellent and the dialogue with the individuals is well paced and structured. Many have the individual talking with their workplace in the background and show short clips of them at work, using equipment etc but this is limited as the viewer needs to be able to concentrate onn what the individual is saying, to get the most from the resource. Many refer to subjects at school which they enjoyed, and which they now use in their work, and all refer to general employability skills and qualities which are important. Some also refer to other related work roles with which they work. All the individuals speak enthusiastically about their work and are able to explain either a project they are working on, or something they particularly like about the job, in a very accessible way, even though some of the roles are very technical

June 2011 – Challenging Gender Stereotypes DVD As with other Careers4u.tv products, the production is high quality, the interviews well structured and paced, and the interviewees talk with great enthusaism about their work, how they got into it and what their ambitions are. They are excellent ambassadors for the careeers and sectors they represent. There is plenty of scope to use the resource in planned learning sessions with young people as part of careers education or PSHE education.

December 2010 This resource provides a valuable insight into the world of work with current up-to-date information provided through ‘quick-fire’ interviews with young people following STEM-related careers. It will provide a very useful addition to any teacher’s resource bank. Read full review

October 2010 – Creative & Media DVD “The case studies are all interesting and informative. They will help young people get behind the two-dimensional nature of the job titles and reach some understanding of the sort of work they might become engaged in. The enthusiasm of each individual comes across, alongside the ways in which they have been able to respond to the opportunities that their job has given them. Careers practitioners will also be able to work with or underline the more generic messages, eg the need for inter-personal skills, enterprise, business skills, and the need to customise product or services. The case studies can be used for independent exploration or as a classroom resource. Read full review

What a Teacher says

I have spent some time looking at the film clips and site as promised and I have to say it looks superb. I don’t think it is bias in any way and I like the gender stereotyping section under 4Teachers. I have looked at lots of clips and I like the fact that you have included the qualifications as well as links to the persons employer. A lot of our students ask what qualifications they require to go into certain occupational areas so this is really informative. One thing I was delighted to see on careers4u was the section in explore by favourite subject. Lots of students choose subjects they enjoy or are good at but have no idea where they may lead in the future so this is excellent. As you expand so will the subjects. We now have this installed on our school VLE and I will be promoting it to both students, parents and teachers over this coming summer term.

What a Careers Advisor says

My background is in Executive Search and for the last 12 months I have been a Careers advisor in the  Careers department at Chelmsford College. I also deliver Careers presentations in my childrens school. I quite often help students I know, with their subject choices at A level, CV guidance and post grad job search applications. I have watched a couple of the videos – they are helpful, informative and realistic. Regards

What Sector Skills Councils say

PUBLIC SERVICES DIPLOMA DVD

Today I watched the whole thing through and was very impressed.  I thought that the style was appealing and the range of jobs you managed to get were very good and a fair reflection of public services.  I thought the people were good, the questions were great and even the fact that you managed to get a really good mix of accents in there is a plus point.  It was especially good to get the bit in about Apprenticeships with the museum example.

CONSTRUCTION DIPLOMA

I’m very pleased that our ambassadors have been able to help you in your project, and Jane Davies from the National Heritage Training Group has also spoken very highly of your work so ConstructionSkills is only too pleased to be a part of it!

HAIR AND BEAUTY DIPLOMA

We felt the DVD clips were a very good source of information for learners for further discussion that could be lead by an informed Hair and Beauty Careers adviser. We felt the clips allowed learners an understanding of some of the breadth of opportunity within the Hair and Beauty Sector, highlighting some very specific fascinating job roles and opportunities that could be potentially available to them The Beauty Therapy clip was particularly good as it really explained the qualifications required and the different opportunities for training and career development within the Beauty Therapy industry We also like the use of the self employment angle within the Barbering clips, as the majority of businesses within the Hair and Beauty sector are single or micro enterprises.
